There have been countless heroes
over the years for the Chicago Police
Department.
But there have also been a number
of heroes behind the scenes who have
given a big financial hand in helping
make the $3 million site of Gold Star
Families and Memorial Park a reality.
"I am honored to support the
Chicago Police Memorial Foundation
in its 'homage' to build a memorial
and park as a tribute to those brave
men and women who have made the ultimate
sacrifice for the citizens of our
city," said Philip Corboy Sr.
of Corboy and Demetrio PC. "In
my opinion, Chicago is the best city
in the world in part because of the
valiant members of the Chicago Police
Department."
The future memorial between Soldier
Field and Burnham Harbor will feature
a spiraling concrete and granite "sacrifice"
wall etched with the names of fallen
officers, and a central plaza where
up to 5,000 people can gather. The
groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled
for 7:30 p.m. Monday.
"In the spring and summer of
1968, I was a cadet assigned to special
projects and research," said
Art Hannus, chairman
of American Heritage Protective Services.
"There were 10 officers killed
in the line of duty that year. I saw
up close how the tragedy of a fallen
officer affected their immediate families
and friends, every member of the department
and the entire city. Every day when
police officers put their uniforms
on and head out the door, no one knows
if they're coming home. Only heroes
do this for work."
